About six weeks ago I went for a walk with my ‘hero partner’ Charbel Zeaiter from Often Human. He’s a genius with words (subscribe to his Substack and you’ll see what I mean) and he lent me two words that he believed reflected who I am and what I stand for.
Beautiful Madness.
I have had a love affair with those two words since they left Charbel’s mouth. I have been listening into them and asking them questions. What do they want from me? How are they to inform my leadership? How do they want to play in 2025?
A few days after my walk with Charbel, I was washing up in the kitchen and randomly heard my voice in my head. I heard my voice speaking out a sentence followed by the words ‘That was my first moment of beautiful madness’. I then realised what I’d heard was the prologue to a book I have been intending to write and indeed have made several attempts, yet all work has remained incomplete. I now know what the book is in service to.
This morning in my Notes to Self I was intuitively pulled to write out a chronology of my most significant life-changing moments of beautiful madness. It’s what I discovered after I wrote the 30th moment that is the reason for this article.
You may have heard the expression that the tree lives inside the acorn. Marianne Williamson teaches this in A Course in Miracles.
The tree inside the acorn is a profound symbol of faith beyond reason—a quiet, persistent trust in unseen potential, regardless of immediate circumstances. Encased within the small, unassuming acorn lies the blueprint for a mighty oak, a truth that defies logic and remains invisible to the eye. Yet, the acorn never questions its purpose or the challenges it will face; it simply grows, responding to the subtle cues of the earth and the sky.
I realised that what has allowed me to lead a life of beautiful madness is that I have faith beyond reason that is unconditional to circumstance.
I have faith beyond reason that is unconditional to circumstance.
I had quite an emotional moment when I wrote that out earlier today. I’ve said this before - sometimes ways of being are so natural to us that we don’t see them, just like we can’t see what is under our nose. Try it. You’ll never see your lips.
The leaps I’ve taken. The propositions I’ve made. The decisions I’ve made.
They have all been underpinned by faith beyond reason that have been unconditional to circumstance.
I have worked with people with all sorts of trauma, psychosis, sexual abuse, cancer, motor neurone disease, bankruptcy, the dissolution of marriages and work partnerships, public failure, crisis, end of life stage, financial contraction, crisis of confidence, addiction, depression, anxiety, grief, betrayal, breakdown…..
My husband sometimes says he doesn’t know how I do what I do and others have asked me ‘don’t you get drained?’.
If I’m out of alignment, yes.
If my client is not playing the 100% personal responsibility game, yes.
Otherwise, every conversation gives myself and my client energy. Every conversation is life-giving for both of us, even when I’ve held my final conversations with those who have passed.
Because faith beyond reason, unconditional of circumstance is life-giving.
Faith nurtures what reason cannot yet conceive.
As we come to the final week of 2024, especially if there are places within your life that remain unresolved and full of potential, the biggest gift you could give to yourself is this.
With the perspective that the tree lives inside the acorn, ask yourself these questions:
What was it that you needed to see this year?
What was it that you needed to decide this year?
What was right under your nose all along?
I needed to see what was right under my nose - that every moment of beautiful madness was conceived because of faith beyond reason and circumstance.
I’ve decided to explicitly lead this conversation going forward. Because it’s time to surrender into the new (again) to see what else is possible.
Let’s stop playing predictable and go against the tide of safety.
Let’s live inside the field of beautiful madness and play with the field of possibility and potentiality.
Because this is a time of harvest.
Wishing you a restful, enjoyable, contemplative holiday season with family, friends and of course yourself.
