On this Anzac Day be inspired by Veteran Troy Methorst about radical compassion & forgiveness
This is an on your knees story
On this Anzac Day 25 April 2023, having just attended the dawn service at Dee Why Beach, I am inspired to re-post this episode with Veteran Troy Methorst. I had the great pleasure of meeting Troy and his wife Bec Sedgman at our Croatia Retreat last September and will be meeting them again at our Kenya Retreat next week.
What an honour it was to interview Troy who was a Search Team Commander in Afghanistan until 2012 and later co-founded Veteran Mentors in 2017 working with teens and their families.
It's an 'on your knees' story.
Troy begins with sharing a 20 minute video montage of his time in Afghanistan. It was meant just for me to get a feel for his life there but as he was speaking I realised we were already in the interview and so I used some of the audio. *Trigger warning*
Troy then shares about his return to Australia and the hate, rage and grief that lived inside and the fierce inability to forgive people for decisions that were made that cost lives in his troop.
And he then shares how he came to a place of radical compassion and forgiveness - I imagine a place of impossibility, understandably for many veterans.
I’m in so much gratitude for the rawness of Troy’s mammoth vulnerability.
Troy’s life is a demonstration of the possibility that grief, hate and rage can be transformed through the power of radical compassion and forgiveness, particularly and especially with people and circumstances where that feels entirely impossible.
If you have a teen who is suffering their own internal wars, and/or if you as an adult is suffering your own an internal war or know of someone who is, please listen to this episode and call on Troy for support.
This is a lengthy 1 hour 20 minute episode and every second is worth your time and presence on this Anzac Day.
